Biography

Janice Gould, whose tribal affiliation is Concow, grew up in Berkeley, California.   She attended the University of California at Berkeley, where she earned a BA in Linguistics and an MA in English.  She holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of New Mexico, where she studied with Patricia Clark Smith and the late Louis Owens.  She recently earned an MA in Library Science from the University of Arizona, where she was a Knowledge River and an Associated Research Libraries scholar.

Janice is the former Chair of Creative Writing at Willamette University, and she has taught poetry workshops privately and at The Flight of the Mind writing workshops for women.  Her current teaching includes classes in Native American literature and culture, Native American Philosophies, and Native and Indigenous Perspectives on Museums.
Her poetry has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and from the Astraea Foundation.   She was also awarded fellowships for her scholarly work from the Ford Foundation and from the Roothbert Foundation.
Janice lives with her partner, writer Marie-Elise Wheatwind, in Colorado Springs.  She is an Assistant Professor in Women’s and Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.
